The Study of Sepai
The Art of Attack & Defense
Sepai kata was passed to Mabuni Kenwa by Higaonna Kanryo, one of the most important karate masters in Okinawa during the late 19th century and a student of Chinese Boxing master Ryu Ryu Ko with who Higaonna studied with in the Fuzhou region of China. Kenwa Mabuni’s 1934 book ‘Seipai no Kenkyu’ (Study of Seipai) makes extensive references to the Bubishi and aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It documents Seipai kata’s 18 movements, including grappling, joint locks and close-quarters fighting techniques. Mabuni’s text is often regarded as a crucial text on traditional Okinawa Karate. This seminar will be Instructed by Charles Hunter Kyoshi, 6th Dan, Chief Instructor of Itosu-kai Scotland.
